How Privacy Filters Improve Driving Safety

With the increasing prevalence of displays in modern vehicles—whether it's the central information display (CID), in-car navigation systems, or entertainment displays—drivers need clear visuals without interference from reflected light. While privacy screen filters have traditionally been used to protect privacy, their role in enhancing driving safety has become even more critical.

Vehicle displays typically have high brightness levels. However, when light from the display reflects off the car windows or other surfaces, it can interfere with the driver's visibility, compromising safety. Privacy filters, with their optical microstructures, are designed to control light angles, significantly reducing the scattering of light. By minimizing reflection, these filters improve visual clarity, enabling drivers to clearly see the display content and reducing the risk of visual distractions caused by screen glare.

The material choice for privacy screen filters is also crucial to the optical performance of vehicle displays. While traditional privacy filters are often made from PET, this material does not provide sufficient dimensional stability and durability in automotive environments. In contrast, polycarbonate (PC) materials offer superior heat resistance and dimensional stability. Even with temperature fluctuations in the car, PC ensures the privacy filter film maintains stable optical performance, preventing warping or distortion and ensuring consistent visual clarity over time.

Privacy screen filters for vehicle displays must also be tailored to the driver's viewing angle and the position of the screen. For optimal optical performance, these filters need to be custom-cut to match the specific display setup. We offer professional cutting services to precisely align privacy filters, minimizing optical interference between the filter and the backlight module, ensuring the visual performance aligns with customer designs.

However, while privacy screen filters control light angles effectively, they can impact the overall brightness of the screen. To achieve a balance between privacy and clarity, engineers must consider the backlight module structure when selecting the appropriate optical films. Below are some recommendations for privacy filter and optical film combinations based on different backlight module architectures.

Currently, backlight modules are primarily divided into side-lit and direct-lit designs:

  • Edge-lit LCM: This design uses light guide plates, which inherently have lower brightness. When a privacy filter is added, the screen becomes significantly dimmer, reducing visibility. To compensate, additional opitcal films like DBEF and BEF are required to boost brightness, resulting in higher costs and more complex assembly.

  • Direct-lit LCM: This structure has ample brightness, so adding a privacy filter films does not significantly affect screen visibility. In this case, additional DBEF films are unnecessary, making it more cost-effective and easier to assemble.
